Visiting a new dentist can feel uncertain, especially if it's been a while. At Steel Valley Smiles, we designed our first visit experience to put you at ease from the moment you walk in — thorough, comfortable, and completely pressure-free.
Here's what you can expect.
A Comfortable Start
Our front desk team greets you by name. We handle paperwork quickly and answer any questions before you sit down. If you've filled out forms ahead of time, even better — we can move straight into the clinical conversation.
What Happens When You Arrive
We'll talk first about why you came in and what you're hoping to address. Some patients are catching up on cleanings after a few years away. Others are ready to start a cosmetic case. Some just want a second opinion on a treatment plan another dentist gave them. All of those are normal, and all of them are welcome.
Photos, X-Rays, and a Complete Picture
We use digital X-rays and intraoral photos to get a full view of your oral health. These tools help us spot issues early and plan treatment with precision — and the radiation exposure is significantly lower than older film X-rays.
If anything looks like it needs attention, we'll show you the photos and walk through what we're seeing. No black-box diagnoses.

Your Conversation with Dr. D'Alesio
After the exam, Dr. D'Alesio sits down with you to review findings in plain English. No jargon, no pressure. We discuss your goals, answer every question, and build a plan that fits your timeline and budget.
If there are options — and there usually are — we lay them out side by side. You don't have to decide anything at the first visit. Take the information home, think it over, come back when you're ready.
No Surprises
We believe in transparent communication. You will know exactly what we recommend, why we recommend it, and what it costs before any work begins. If insurance applies, we walk through what your plan typically covers. If it doesn't, we explain our membership plan and other options.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a first visit usually take? Plan for about an hour. The exam itself is faster than that, but the conversation afterward — going through findings, options, and any treatment plan — is the part most patients tell us they value most. We don't rush.
Do I need to bring anything? A photo ID, your insurance card if you have one, and a list of any medications you're taking. If you have records or X-rays from a previous dentist, bringing those saves us time. But if you don't, that's fine — we have everything we need on-site.
What if I haven't been to the dentist in a while? There's no judgment here, just a fresh start. A lot of our patients come in after a long gap. We meet you where you are and figure out the right next steps together.
Can I bring my child to the same appointment? Yes — many families do. Just let us know when you book so we can plan the schedule. We see families with kids of all ages.
If you have questions before your visit, give us a call. We're happy to walk through the process, your insurance, or anything else that's on your mind.
